Gudmund Carlo Orla Olsen was a Danish Cubist painter and graphic artist who developed his characteristic vivid Constructivist and Cubist style through self-study in Denmark. After World War II, he settled in Paris, where he continued to experiment with colors, layers, and volumes in well-balanced compositions. Olsen's most celebrated works focus on bustling and energetic coastal and harbor scenes, marked by clear forms, compositional balance, and playful surfaces and volumes.
Olsen debuted in 1940 at the Charlottenborg Annual Exhibition and enjoyed further exhibition successes in France and at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. He co-founded the Association des Artistes Danois en France and won the Prix d'Honneur in Nice in 1951. From 1972 to 1984, he received the State Art Scholarship. His works are held in collections at Museum Jorn, Randers Art Museum, Kunsten Museum of Modern Art Aalborg, Fyns Art Museum, and various institutions in Røsnæs.
