Keith Haring was an American artist and social activist known for his role in the 1980s New York City street culture. Born in Reading, Pennsylvania, and raised in Kutztown, Haring studied at the Ivy School of Professional Art before moving to New York City to attend the School of Visual Arts.

Haring gained fame for his graffiti-inspired chalk drawings in subway stations, featuring bold lines and vivid colors. His art, marked by recurring motifs like dancing figures and radiant babies, was both accessible and energetic. Beyond its visual appeal, Haring's work carried strong social and political messages, advocating for causes such as AIDS awareness, LGBTQ+ rights, and anti-drug campaigns. His "Crack is Wack" mural in Harlem, for example, addressed the crack cocaine epidemic.

Haring also sought to democratize art through his Pop Shop, which sold his designs on affordable items. Despite his early death from AIDS-related complications in 1990, Haring's legacy endures through the Keith Haring Foundation, supporting children’s programs and HIV/AIDS causes. His art remains influential for its dynamic simplicity and engagement with social issues.
