Banksy is an England-based street artist, political activist, and film director who operates under a pseudonym, keeping their real identity a mystery. Active since the 1990s, Banksy's satirical street art and subversive epigrams blend dark humor with graffiti techniques, notably using stencils. Emerging from Bristol's underground scene, which fostered collaborations between artists and musicians, Banksy acknowledges inspiration from 3D of Massive Attack, a graffiti artist, and from French artist Blek le Rat, known for stencil work.

Banksy's art often features striking and humorous images paired with slogans, conveying messages that are anti-war, anti-capitalist, or anti-establishment. Themes explored include anti-consumerism, anti-fascism, and critiques of imperialism and authoritarianism. The human condition is a recurring focus, addressing issues like greed, poverty, hypocrisy, and alienation. Common subjects in Banksy's work include rats, apes, policemen, soldiers, children, and the elderly.

Banksy views graffiti as a form of underclass "revenge" and guerrilla warfare, allowing individuals to challenge and subvert power structures. There's a social commentary aspect to Banksy's art, aiming to mock centralized power and highlight its inefficiencies, encouraging the public to question authority. While primarily visual, Banksy's pieces are rich in iconography and symbolism, conveying powerful messages through artistic expression.
