Pierre Alechinsky is a Belgian artist who has resided in France since 1951, known for his association with tachisme, abstract expressionism, and lyrical abstraction. Born in Schaerbeek, Belgium, to a Russian Jewish father and a Belgian Walloon mother, Alechinsky began his artistic journey studying illustration techniques, printing, and photography at the l'École nationale supérieure d'Architecture et des Arts décoratifs de La Cambre in Brussels in 1944. His artistic influences grew to include Henri Michaux and Jean Dubuffet, and he developed a friendship with art critic Jacques Putman.
In 1949, Alechinsky co-founded the COBRA art group with Karel Appel, Asger Jorn, Constant, and Christian Dotremont. He participated in COBRA exhibitions and later moved to Paris to study engraving at Atelier 17 under Stanley William Hayter in 1951. Alechinsky had his first Paris exhibition in 1954 and became fascinated with Chinese and Japanese calligraphy during this period. As Paris correspondent for the Japanese journal Bokubi in the early 1950s, he further immersed himself in Eastern artistic traditions.
Encouraged by Henri Storck and Luc de Heusch, Alechinsky traveled to Japan with his wife in 1955. By 1960, his international reputation grew with exhibitions in London, Bern, the Venice Biennial, Pittsburgh, New York City, Amsterdam, and Silkeborg. He collaborated with Walasse Ting, maintained close ties with Christian Dotremont, and developed connections with André Breton.
Alechinsky's career flourished in the 1970s, leading to his appointment as Professor of Painting at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris by 1983. His artworks are held in esteemed collections worldwide, including the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, Tate Museum Ludwig in Cologne, Museum of Modern Art in New York, Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, Art Museum of Southeast Texas in Beaumont, and Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale, Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
