Konrad Cramer was a German-American painter and photographer known for his role in early American abstract art and the Woodstock art colony. Born in Würzburg, Germany, Cramer studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, where he was influenced by Cubism and Futurism.
Immigrating to the U.S. in 1911, he settled in Woodstock, New York, becoming a leading figure in American abstraction. His work featured geometric forms, bold colors, and dynamic compositions, blending European modernist principles with American influences.
Cramer was also an innovative photographer, experimenting with photograms to create abstract images. His work, exhibited widely and held in collections such as the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, reflects his significant contribution to modernist art in America.
