Sam Gilliam was an American artist renowned for his innovative contributions to abstract art and his role in the Washington Color School. Born in Tupelo, Mississippi, and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, Gilliam studied at the University of Louisville, earning his BFA and MFA.

After moving to Washington, D.C., in the early 1960s, Gilliam became known for his "drape paintings," which involved staining unframed canvases and suspending them or draping them across spaces, creating a three-dimensional effect. This approach blurred the lines between painting and sculpture.

Gilliam's work featured vibrant colors, layered textures, and complex compositions, reflecting his engagement with social and political issues. His art has been widely exhibited, including at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Tate Modern. He received numerous accolades, including a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the College Art Association.
