Takashi Murakami, often likened to the "Japanese Andy Warhol," was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan. Initially drawn to anime and manga, he pursued studies at Tokyo University of the Arts to become an animator but shifted focus to Nihonga, traditional Japanese painting, completing his master's degree in 1988 and a Ph.D. in 1993. Disenchanted with Nihonga's insular world, he began exploring contemporary styles and media, working in fine arts like painting and sculpture, as well as commercial ventures such as fashion, merchandise, and animation. Murakami is renowned for blending high and low art, integrating Japanese artistic traditions with postwar cultural themes.

Critical of Japan's art scene for its Western influences, Murakami's early works reflected social critique and satire. His projects included performance art like the Osaka Mixer Project (1992), parodies of early '90s Japanese "message" art (Dobozite Dobozite Oshamanbe, 1993), and conceptual pieces such as the Randoseru Project (1991). He created his iconic character, "Mr. DOB," evolving it into a form of self-portraiture and incorporating recurring motifs like smiling flowers, mushrooms, and Buddhist iconography. Murakami's art, described as "superflat," features vibrant colors, glossy surfaces, and a blend of cute, psychedelic, and satirical elements.

His practice involves repackaging subcultural elements for the high-art market and commodifying his artworks as merchandise, including plush toys and T-shirts, to increase accessibility. Murakami's works are held in major international museums and private collections, represented by galleries worldwide. In 2001, he founded Kaikai Kiki Co., Ltd. in Saitama, Japan, which has expanded to include offices in Tokyo, New York, Berlin, and Taiwan, representing various prominent artists.
