William McCloy was a versatile artist, printmaker, teacher, and art historian whose early years in China greatly influenced his artistic journey. Returning to the United States in 1926, he commenced his formal art education at the University of Iowa in 1930, earning his B.A. in Art before further studies at Yale University. McCloy specialized in sculpture, painting, and printmaking under renowned mentors in each discipline during his educational pursuits.
As a professor of art at Drake University and the University of Iowa, McCloy collaborated closely with John Steuart Curry on mural projects, contributing to three murals and completing two commissions independently. His career expanded beyond teaching, including a stint as a clinical psychologist in the U.S. Army. McCloy's dedication to learning led him back to the University of Iowa for Ph.D. studies in both Painting and Art History. He later served as Director of the School of Art at the University of Manitoba and Chairman of the Art Department at Connecticut College.
McCloy exhibited widely at esteemed institutions such as the Chicago Art Institute, the National Academy of Design, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, among others. His works are held in prominent collections including Connecticut College, the Library of Congress, the Wolfsonian Institution, and numerous public and private collections.
