Zvi Mairovich was a pioneering Israeli modernist painter known for his expressive use of color, lyrical abstraction, and contributions to the development of Israeli art in the mid-20th century. Born in Germany, Mairovich immigrated to Mandate Palestine in the 1930s, where he became a central figure in the nascent local art scene.
Mairovich studied at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem and later in Paris, where he was influenced by the European avant-garde, particularly the École de Paris and abstract expressionism. He returned to Israel with a bold, gestural style that combined modern European techniques with the unique light and landscape of the Mediterranean.
A founding member of the influential "Ofakim Hadashim" ("New Horizons") group, Mairovich was instrumental in steering Israeli painting toward abstraction and away from narrative or figurative approaches. His works often feature vivid color fields, textured brushwork, and a sense of rhythm that evokes both the natural world and inner emotional states.
Throughout his career, Mairovich exhibited extensively in Israel and internationally, and his paintings are held in the collections of major institutions, including the Tel Aviv Museum of Art and the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. His work remains emblematic of a generation that sought to forge a distinctly modern Israeli visual language.
